What Is a Center Seal Bag?
A center seal bag is a pillow-shaped pouch formed from a single web of film that is tubed and closed with one longitudinal seal running down the back, then cut and sealed across both ends. It is also called a back seal bag, centre seal pouch, pillow pouch or pillow pack.
That construction is why the format dominates high-volume packing lines. One web means the least film per bag and one continuous print repeat, so a center seal bag is the cheapest pouch format to run and the easiest to fill at speed. On a vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine the film is formed into a tube around the product, and on a flow wrapper the same build runs as a horizontal pillow pack.
The back seal is the defining detail, and it decides two things buyers care about. First, the seal sits on the back panel, so the front panel is completely unbroken and can carry your full artwork. Second, because the seal is a narrow strip on the face rather than an openable edge, a center seal bag is not normally fitted with a zipper — it is a single-use pack closed by its own back seal and end seals. Products that have to be resealed after opening are built as a flat bottom pouch (box pouch) or a spouted pouch, and a flat single-serve portion is usually a three side seal sachet.
Custom, in this context, means six things are set by you instead of taken from a catalogue: bag size, film structure, film thickness, printing, surface finish and the end-seal options such as a tear notch, a hang hole, a degassing valve or a perforated vent. A center seal bag is the lowest-cost flexible pack per unit, but it is not the right format for every product. The difference comes down to seal layout: a center seal bag is made from one film web with a longitudinal back seal, while the other three formats are made from separate panels sealed on all outer edges.

One detail causes most of the back-and-forth on a first center seal order, so it is worth settling early: where the back seal lands on your artwork. The longitudinal seal consumes a strip of the back panel, so if a logo, a product photo or a barcode sits on that strip it will be broken by the seal. Send the artwork with the seal strip marked, or ask us to mark it for you on the drawing before plates are made.

Can a center seal bag have a zipper?
No — and this is the one point buyers most often get wrong when they compare formats. A center seal bag is closed by its own longitudinal back seal plus two end seals, so there is no openable edge to fit a zipper into. If the pack has to be resealed after opening, the correct formats are a flat bottom pouch with a zipper, a stand-up zipper pouch or a spouted pouch, all of which we produce in the same plant on the same film structures.
Center seal bags are instead opened with a tear notch, a laser score or an easy-peel strip, and closure after opening is handled by a clip, a tin tie or the consumer’s own container. MOQ, Pricing and the One-Roll Rule
Pricing for custom center seal bags is driven by two things: how the artwork is printed, and how much film the order consumes. Ruihong Packaging quotes 10,000 pcs minimum for gravure printing and 3,000 pcs per order for digital, and unit price drops noticeably once an order consumes one full roll of film.
The one-roll rule: how buyers calculate the best price point
One roll of film holds 6,000 metres. The quantity that consumes one full roll is 6,000 ÷ bag width in metres. The buyer example we quote from most often: for a 160 (W) × 240 (H) + 85 mm pouch, one roll equals 6,000 ÷ 0.16 = 37,500 pcs.
A center seal bag is formed from one web, so the film a bag consumes is twice its finished width. The working rule of thumb on a pillow bag is 6,000 ÷ (2 × bag width), which gives a conservative figure you can plan the order around. A 160 mm wide pillow bag uses roughly 0.32 m of film, so one roll covers about 18,750 bags; an 80 mm wide bag uses about 0.16 m and reaches one roll at roughly 37,500 bags.
Digital printing has no real minimum quantity. The 3,000 pcs floor exists to cover international shipping, multiple SKUs can be combined to reach it, and unit price rises noticeably when any single SKU is very small. If you are launching several flavours, fill weights or fragrances at once, digital printing with combined SKUs is usually the cheaper route.

Shipping transit time is additional. Projects combining several SKUs are usually faster on digital, because there is no plate making step.

The best gravure price point is one full roll of film: a roll holds 6,000 m, so the quantity is 6,000 divided by bag width in metres. For a 160 mm wide pillow bag that works out at about 18,750 pcs.
