What Custom Stand Up Pouches Are

A custom stand up pouch, also called a doypack or stand-up zipper pouch, is a flexible pouch built with a gusseted base and a laminated film structure chosen for your product, fill weight, shelf life and printing artwork.

Two manufacturing details decide how well the pouch performs. The first is material structure: a two-layer film such as PET/PE suits dry snacks, while a three-layer PET/AL/PE structure blocks light, oxygen and moisture for coffee, powders and long shelf-life foods. The second is the seal and closure system. A bottom gusset gives the pouch its stand-up stability, a resealable zipper keeps a pack usable after opening, a one-way valve releases coffee degassing gas, and a spout turns the same pouch into a liquid pack.

Every project is made to your own dimensions and artwork. Sizes are quoted in width × height + bottom gusset, printed on up to 11-color rotogravure printing or digitally for short runs, and finished with matte, glossy or soft-touch lamination. See the full custom packaging process for how a project moves from artwork to delivery.

Why Buyers Choose Ruihong for Stand Up Pouches

Buyers comparing stand up pouch suppliers usually weigh four things: colour accuracy on the printed film, minimum order quantity, how the pouch behaves on the filling line, and how predictable the production lead time is. Our equipment list answers all four.

Colour-critical printing on 11 colors

Four rotogravure lines cover 7, 8, 9 and 11-color work. Most industry presses run 7-9 colors, so brand artwork with fine gradients, skin tones or metallic detail has more room on our 11-color press.

Two order routes, low risk to start

Digital printing starts at 3,000 pcs per order with no printing plates, so a launch or market test stays affordable. Gravure starts at 10,000 pcs and gives the lowest unit price at volume.

A structure matched to your product

We build two-layer and three-layer laminates on 3 solvent-free lines and 2 dry lamination machines, then recommend the film by fill weight, barrier need and target shelf life instead of quoting one standard film.

Seal quality checked in house

55 bag-making and auxiliary machines handle zipper application and bottom-gusset forming, and every batch runs through 6 quality inspection machines before packing.

Lead time you can plan around

Production takes 7-9 days for digital printing and 12-15 days for gravure printing, counted from artwork approval and order confirmation, so your filling schedule is not left open-ended.

One point of contact

Jason handles your enquiry end to end, from material recommendation and size calculation to artwork checks and packing, so specifications do not get lost between departments.

Custom Stand Up Pouch Specifications

Almost nothing about a stand up pouch is fixed: size, material, thickness, closure and printing are all made to order. The table below lists the options we quote most often, so you can confirm what fits your product before requesting a price.

Item Standard options Notes
Pouch styleStand up pouch (doypack), stand-up zipper pouch, spout pouch, valve pouch, clear stand up pouchThe base gusset is what lets the filled pouch stand on a shelf
Size rangeWidth 80-300 mm, height 100-400 mm, bottom gusset 30-85 mmQuoted as width × height + gusset, for example 160 (W) × 240 (H) + 85 mm
Material structurePET/PE, PET/VMPET/PE, PET/AL/PE, kraft paper/PET/PE, PA/PE, mono-PEStructure follows barrier need, fill weight and target shelf life
Thickness80-180 micron (3.1-7.1 mil) total film thicknessThicker film resists punctures and heavier fills; it also raises unit cost
PrintingRotogravure up to 11 colors, or digital printingApplied color count follows the artwork; the 11-color press is one of our 4 rotogravure lines
MOQ10,000 pcs (gravure) / 3,000 pcs per order (digital)Digital printing has no real minimum — the 3,000 pcs floor covers international shipping, and multiple SKUs can be combined to reach it
Best-price pointOne full roll of film (6,000 m)Quantity per roll = 6,000 ÷ bag width (m). Example: 160 (W) × 240 (H) + 85 mm → 6,000 ÷ 0.16 = 37,500 pcs
Production lead time7-9 days (digital) / 12-15 days (gravure)Counted from artwork approval and order confirmation, not a door-to-door transit time
AccessoriesResealable zipper, one-way valve, spout, tear notch, hang hole, handleAccessories change the bag-making line setup, so confirm them before tooling
Surface finishGlossy, matte, soft touch, spot UVMatte and soft touch suit premium positioning; glossy gives stronger shelf contrast
PackingExport cartons on pallets, count per carton agreed at orderCarton marks follow your instruction

One roll of film is 6,000 meters long, so the quantity that consumes a full roll is 6,000 ÷ bag width in metres. Ordering close to that figure is the most cost-effective way to buy gravure printed pouches. See how we build them on the manufacturing capabilities page.

Rotogravure vs Digital Printing: Which Route Fits Your Order

Digital printing has no plates and suits 3,000-10,000 pcs or several SKUs at once; rotogravure needs cylinders but returns a much lower unit price from 10,000 pcs upward and holds colour most consistently across repeat orders.

Print method Best fit MOQ Production lead time Colour and plates
Rotogravure printing Bulk runs, established products, repeat orders 10,000 pcs 12-15 days Up to 11 colors; cylinders are made for the artwork
Digital printing Trial orders, new launches, multi-SKU fills 3,000 pcs per order 7-9 days No plates; unit price rises when a single SKU is very small

Both lead times are production time counted from artwork approval and order confirmation. Multi-SKU digital orders are quoted as one order quantity, because the 3,000 pcs floor exists to cover international shipping rather than a true printing minimum.

Stand Up Pouch Material Structures

The film structure is the single biggest driver of shelf life and cost. A two-layer PET/PE pouch is economical and clear; a three-layer PET/AL/PE pouch blocks light and oxygen for coffee, powders and long shelf-life food.

Material structure Barrier level Typical products Why buyers choose it
PET/PEBasicDried fruit, candy, hardware parts, dry powdersMost economical, good clarity, fine for short shelf life
PET/VMPET/PEMediumSnacks, granola, biscuits, teaMetallized layer improves barrier at moderate cost, light-blocking
PET/AL/PEHighCoffee, meat products, long shelf-life food, industrial chemicalsAluminium foil blocks light, oxygen and moisture for the longest shelf life
Kraft paper/PET/PEMediumCoffee, tea, organic and natural brandsNatural paper finish with a printable matte surface
PA/PEMedium to highFrozen food, vacuum-packed goods, liquid refillsNylon adds puncture and flex resistance for tough handling
Mono-PEBasic to mediumRefill packs, brands targeting recyclable packagingSingle-material film for easier recyclability, with a higher film cost

Barrier data and film recommendations depend on the product itself. Send the product type, fill weight, filling temperature and required shelf life and we will recommend a structure rather than guess. Laminated kraft work is covered on the kraft paper laminated packaging page, and film-only supply on the roll stock film page.

Customization Options: Zippers, Valves, Spouts and Finishes

Beyond printing, most stand up pouch projects are defined by the closure and finishing details. Zippers and tear notches serve the consumer, valves protect coffee, spouts convert the pouch for liquids, and lamination sets the shelf impression.

Customization Options What it does for your product
Resealable zipperStandard press-to-close or slider zipperKeeps an opened pack usable; common on coffee, snacks and pet food
One-way degassing valveRound or shaped valveReleases carbon dioxide from roasted coffee without letting oxygen in
SpoutSmall or large diameter, cappedConverts the pouch for juice, puree, sauce and liquid refills
Tear notchSingle or double notchLets the consumer open the pouch without scissors
Hang holeRound or euro-slotLets small pouches hang on retail pegboards
HandleDie-cut or applied handleMakes larger bags of 2-5 kg easier to carry
Surface finishGlossy, matte, soft touch, spot UVSets the premium or retail-shelf look of the printed film

Closure details must be confirmed before bag-making is set up, because each one changes the machine configuration. Liquid projects that need a spout are covered by spout pouches, and box-shaped formats by flat bottom pouches.

Applications: Which Products Go in Stand Up Pouches

Stand up pouches work across dry, frozen and liquid products, but the film, seal and closure have to change with the product. The table maps common categories to the structures and features we quote for them.

Quality Control Before Your Pouches Ship

11-color rotogravure printing line at Ruihong Packaging in Foshan, China Final quality inspection and packing of stand up pouches before export delivery

Checks are built into the line rather than added at the end: film and print are inspected during production, bag formation is monitored for seal consistency, and finished pouches are counted and packed only after the 6 quality inspection machines pass the batch.

  • Incoming film — structure and thickness confirmed against the approved specification before printing starts.
  • Print inspection — colour and registration checked against the approved proof through the run.
  • Lamination bond — layer bonding verified so the pouch does not delaminate after filling.
  • Seal and closure — bottom gusset, side seals and zipper application checked on samples from each batch.
  • Count and packing — final quantity, carton marks and packing method confirmed before the goods leave the plant.

Stand Up Pouch Buyer Questions

These are the questions buyers ask most often before placing a first stand up pouch order: how low the minimum quantity can go, how long production takes, how to reach the best unit price and how the material is chosen.

Digital printing: MOQ is 3,000 pcs per order. Digital printing itself has no minimum quantity — the 3,000 pcs floor exists to cover international shipping costs, and multiple SKUs can be combined to reach it. Gravure printing: MOQ is 10,000 pcs, and unit price becomes significantly more competitive once the order reaches one full roll of film.

Production lead time is 7-9 days for digital printing and 12-15 days for gravure printing. Both are counted from artwork approval and order confirmation, not from the first enquiry, and neither includes international transit time. Gravure orders also need cylinder engraving before the run, so confirm the final artwork early.

One full roll of film: a roll holds 6,000 meters of film, so the quantity that consumes one roll is 6,000 ÷ bag width in metres. For a 160 (W) × 240 (H) + 85 mm pouch that is 6,000 ÷ 0.16 = 37,500 pcs. Gravure unit price improves markedly at that level, and below one roll the price falls as quantity rises.

Yes, on digital printing. Several designs, sizes or flavours can be combined in one order to reach the 3,000 pcs floor, which is why digital suits new ranges and multi-SKU launches. Be aware that unit price rises noticeably when any single SKU is very small, so send the split per SKU with your enquiry so we can quote it accurately.

It depends on your barrier requirement. PET/PE suits dry snacks and short shelf life; PET/VMPET/PE adds a metallized layer for medium barrier; PET/AL/PE uses aluminium foil for coffee, powders and long shelf-life foods; kraft laminates give a natural paper look; mono-PE supports recyclability targets. Tell us the product, fill weight and target shelf life and we will recommend a structure.

Yes, with a spout fitted. Liquids such as juice, puree, sauce and detergent are filled through a spout or a wide filling opening, then sealed, which is why the format is also called a spout pouch or nozzle pouch. For those projects we agree the film thickness, spout size, fill volume and seal specification with you before production.

Yes. Free stock samples of our standard pouches are available so you can check film quality, print finish and seal strength; freight is collected on your courier account. Stock samples do not carry your artwork. If you need a pouch printed with your own design, ask for a custom digitally printed sample, which is charged according to size and quantity.

Six things: pouch size as width, height and bottom gusset in millimetres; material or barrier requirement; target fill weight; order quantity and how many SKUs; the accessories you want, such as zipper, valve or spout; and your artwork file with the number of print colors. Adding the delivery city lets us quote EXW, FOB or CIF.
